INTRODUCING... Worship Pastor Derek Henbest

FACEBOOK   twitter  MySpace  www.theWaitingKind.com

As one first meets Derek Henbest, you have to find him...

He is a humble man with a northwest hair top, some type of vest over a v-neck or snap-button Levis shirt, a vintage belt and buckle holding up his skinny jeans which sometimes tuck into and sometimes cover alligator looking pointy boots that remind me of Benny Perez or a lead singer from the hood of Portland OR.

He blesses others with an original perma-smile that has a "father like" anointing and there is always a half dozen look-a-likes that seem to trail him as if his talent is falling off him for those to pick up and keep. He wants the best for those around him and those around him always see his best.

Derek Henbest is the Worship Pastor at Capital Christian Center in Boise Idaho and lead singer for a band called The Waiting Kind. He is also the husband to Katie Henbest (a woman of God that will "out joy" you).

I would like to say one more thing about Derek Henbest before you read the interview. If you go and see Derek lead hundreds of youth into intimate worship with God on a Wednesday night then you will find youth barely in their teens who have been raised up by this man of God to play instruments with him. The gifts that God has given him, he uses to equip younger generations.

Thank you Pastor Derek for being a disciple maker and world changer!

*at the end of the interview there is a link to download a FREE song by The Waiting Kind and don't forget to buy his album on iTunes!

1) Coke or Pepsi?
Coke always
2) Snake or alligator boots?

Snake
3) Icee or Slurpee?

Icee
4) Snickers or Milky Way?

Snickers
5) What variety of M&M’s? [p-nut, p-nut butter, or plain]

Plain. I'm a simple man
6) When did you hear the call of God to become a worship pastor?

When I was 15...can still remember the presence of God in that meeting
7) What has been your favorite service you’ve played in?

Its a toss up between Easter services and Christmas Eve services...love the atmosphere when people show up ready to give/receive
8) What do you love to see most in a worship service?

Love the moment when God shows up and people take their eyes off of whats going on...and realize who just showed up....(hands raised, sometimes speechless, mostly grateful/humbled)
9) Who is your mentor?

Krist Wilde/ My father
10) Who is your greatest critic/someone who spurs you on?

My wife no competition. love her.
11) Who are your influences as a musician and as a pastor?

My musical influences are broad yet specific...meaning i have to feel inspired when i listen to it otherwise i don't get into it. Also the Psalms...make them a daily reading habit...they always inspire lyrics and thoughts.
12) What is your life Scripture?

Phil 3:8- really the whole chapter. It never ceases to GRIP my heart with truth in that statement.
13) What is the most important event which has shaped you as a pastor?

Whenever I am around people/pastors/leaders that I look up to...I always allow it to shape me.
14) What advice do you have for a young person considering going to interns vs. college?

I believe its really a decision that needs to be EARNESTLY prayed about...I believe God's call is never generic its always SPECIFIC...talk with a leader/pastor you trust and ask more importantly what the Lord thinks. I LOVED my Intern year...it set me up for what God has for my life! But for others...college is what the Lord has for them.
15) How did you meet your wife?

She played at GCB for an invite night in the lobby...and I helped her carry her equipment out to her car after the show...with full intentions of getting to know her. ha.
16) Do you have advice for young people regarding purity, dating, and marriage?

Like my pastor Krist Wilde always says...purity is not what you DON'T do its what you DO do. I personally had to make it up in my mind that God wants the best for my life and His ways are better than mine! Now that I'm married...I love every moment I get with my wife. It was worth every "waiting" period.
17) How do you (personally) hear the voice of God when writing lyrics?

I have to get "away" in my mind...block out all the traffic of the day. Sing some melodies...Psalm 45 is my theme scripture when writing lyrics: "my tongue is the pen of a ready scribe..." I am always open to hearing what God is speaking to me throughout my day...when I write I just allow it to flow into melodies. Hopefully that makes sense.
18) What are some of your personal goals and ministry goals?

Well this is difficult for a worship/music dude to describe...without sounding really generic I would love to be apart of thousands of people getting lost in Gods presence and seeing broken hearts/bodies healed...prodigals return home from knowing God is in the room and that He never left them, in fact pursued them all the way home. Goals like that...but for me lately God has been stirring in me the goal to write songs that help encourage "THE CHURCH" maybe He could use my meek melodies and C+ musical ability to sing a phrase into the heart a person who is seeking the heart of the Father. Humbling thought.
front man for a group called The Waiting Kind. How did the band begin?

It begun my intern year with Dust and I just worshiping together in the prayer room of our church...writing...arranging till pretty soon other guys wanted to get involved and songs starting coming together.
20) What are the names of the other band members?

Dustin LaMont. Brittain "Beiber" Belden yes that was a reference to Justin Beiber. and last but not least Jeff Bull Jr.
21) As a pastor/musician/lead worshipper, what legacy would you like to leave for the next generation?

I would like to leave this legacy on the stage every time we worship..."He must increase. We must Decrease." That is when lives encounter the Savior and not the mishaps of us.

Thank you Pastor Derek Henbest! I can see why God has put you in front of thousands and with other national acts like Leeland, Spoken and many others. Also thank you to the Waiting Kind who has not just impacted my youth group but many others around the world! Oh and say hi to your pastors for us... we miss you guys so much! I hope we worship together again before Heaven!
